Creates widgets that display excerpts from posts or pages in the sidebar. You may use ‘more’ links and/or link the widget title to the post or page. Requires Page Excerpt or Excerpt Editor for page excerpts. Supports the_excerpt Reloaded and Advanced Excerpt.

Versions 2.0 and up require WordPress 2.8. If you are using WordPress 2.3 through 2.7.1, you should use version 1.2 of this plugin instead.

Fancy Excerpt WordPress Plugin »

The fancy excerpt plugin for WordPress replaces the default automatic excerpt generator with a sentence aware excerpt generator.

When automatically generating an excerpt, WordPress will no longer cut your posts after an arbitrary number of characters. Instead, it will keep adding complete paragraphs until 30 words or more are returned. It then completes the excerpt with a More… link.

Wp-Wikipedia-Excerpt WordPress Plugin »

The basic idea here is that you can easily link to the wikipedia entry for a given topic by putting the [wikipedia]topic[/wikipedia] tag into your post. The tag is replaced by a link that executes the wikipedia search form for that topic.

The plan is to augment this with a mouseover popup containing an excerpt from the wikipedia page.

Excerpts Deluxe WordPress Plugin »

The WordPress built-in support for excerpts is somewhat basic.

This plugin extends that support and adds the following features:

* choose after how many words the excerpt should cut off
* OR choose after how many characters the excerpt should cut off
* choose the cutoff character (default: html horizontal ellipsis, aka three dots)

With this plugin, excerpts will happen automatically. There is no need to put in the ‘read more’ tag and there is no need to add a Post Excerpt field by hand. However, if you do one of those things, you will override your manual excerpt for that specific post.

Advanced Excerpt WordPress Plugin »

This plugin adds several improvements to WordPress’ default way of creating excerpts.

1. It can keep HTML markup in the excerpt (and you get to choose which tags are included)
2. It trims the excerpt to a given length using either character count or word count
3. You can customise the excerpt length and the ellipsis character that will be used when trimming
4. The excerpt length is real (everything belonging to HTML tags is not counted)
5. Possibility to ignore custom excerpts and use the generated one instead
6. Theme developers can use the_advanced_excerpt() for even more control (see the FAQ)

In addition to keeping HTML markup in the excerpt, the plugin also corrects HTML that might have been broken due to the trimming process.

Version 0.2.1 adds support for multibyte characters (eg. Chinese and Japanese). This is slightly experimental, more details in the FAQ. Plugin translations are fully supported and language files are included for translation. The FAQ provides more info on this, also.

Excerpt Image Link WordPress Plugin »

A plugin which looks for tags in the excerpt and, if found, wraps them with a link to the post permalink.

Helps with thumbnail images in the excerpt shown on the index page. There isn’t any rocket science here – it’s simply up to the post author to provide the image (and text) in the optional excerpt in WordPress’ write a post form. However, the “trick” bit is to make that thumbnail image a hyper-link to the post. I’ve done this with this simple WordPress plug-in.
